What is improv?
The improv movement focuses on the sharpening of the human mind’s potential for spontaneous creativity. It comes in many forms, has many applications, and can be a helpful tool no matter what your profession. Historically, improvised comedic performances can be traced as far back as ancient Etruscan civilization. Today, modern improv techniques and theory are widely used in and out of the theatre and improvised comedic performances are experiencing a growing revival.
Can I learn improv?
Yes! Whatever your goal maybe – get passed creative blocks, be a more confident decision maker, feel more comfortable in front of a crowd, or just have a good laugh at the end of a stressful day – improv can help you achieve it! Many of the groups on our groups page offer classes.
What can I expect at an improv show?
Improvisational theatre strips away the cumbersome props, sets, costumes, and scripts of traditional theatre in order to create a custom-made comedic experience for each audience. Most people are simply familiar with Whose Line Is It Anyway?, but improv takes on many different forms. Live performances often do include games, but some are full-length improvised plays, and others take the art form in totally new directions. Check out our calendar for a list of local shows.
Is there a local improv festival?
Yes, there is! The Black Box Improv Festival brings together local and national touring groups for a weekend of non-stop hilarity. Festival patrons can see shows and take workshops. Details are listed at BlackBoxImprov.com.
