What is improv?

According to Wikipedia, “Improvisational theatre allows an interactive relationship with the audience. Improv groups frequently solicit suggestions from the audience as a source of inspiration, a way of getting the audience involved, and as a means of proving that the performance is not scripted … Modern improvisational comedy falls generally into two categories: shortform and longform. Shortform improv consists of short scenes usually constructed from a predetermined game, structure, or idea and driven by an audience suggestion. The shortform improv comedy television series Whose Line Is It Anyway? has familiarized American and British viewers with shortform. Longform improv performers create shows in which short scenes are often interrelated by story, characters, or themes. Longform shows may take the form of an existing type of theatre, for example a full-length play or Broadway-style musical.”

Can I learn improv?

Yes! Whatever your goal maybe – get passed creative blocks, be a more confident decision maker, feel more comfortable in front of a crowd, team-building or just have a good laugh at the end of a stressful day – improv can help you achieve it! Many of the groups on our Groups page offer classes.

Is there a festival in Atlanta that I can submit my improv group to perform in?

Yes, there is! The Black Box Comedy Festival brings together local and national touring groups for a weekend of non-stop hilarity. Festival patrons can see shows and take workshops. Details are listed at BlackBoxComedy.com.
